Be leery of letdown players

Even top players can still hold you back from winning

The time is now for the majority of the fantasy football drafts, but it’s the letdown players who could ruin your season.

I will give one player from each player grouping to be leery of high expectations.

Quarterback

Trey Lance, San Francisco: The Lance hype is for real!

His upside is based more his running ability, but he still has to complete passes to be a top QB in the NFL.

Lance played three games last season where he attempted 18 or more passes. In those games, his completion percentage was 57 percent.

Add in the 49ers are still a run-first team, Lance may struggle to reach fantasy owners elite hopes.

Don't get me wrong, Lance has elite upside as I have him as my sleeper in my Boom-Bust: QB story, but he needs to improve his completion percentage to be top tier.

Running back

Jonathan Taylor, Indianapolis: Taylor is still an elite RB1 in fantasy football, but maybe not a Top 3 guy this season.

The 370-touch RB curse should make team managers take a long look at Taylor.

He finished with 372 touches last season and had more than 80 touches in the red zone. And running backs tend to have a drop-off in production the year after the 370 touches.

Matt Ryan is an upgrade at quarterback, compared to Carson Wentz. And the Colts’ coaching staff is even hoping less is more for Taylor.

Wide Receiver

Ja’Marr Chase, Cincinnati: Chase is a true enigma in fantasy football.

Will he put up great season long stats? Yes!

But will he frustrate you with his bust weeks? Another yes!

During his standout rookie season, Chase had 10 games where he scored 13.7 points or less in PPR. He had four games of 100 yards receiving or more, and those four games accounted for 751 of his 1,455 yards receiving for the season.

Personally, those weekly numbers are not what I want from the No. 1 WR on my fantasy team.

Tight End

Pat Freiermuth, Pittsburgh: Freiermuth had a big year in fantasy as a rookie. Well, at least, it seemed like it.

Freiermuth finished as the TE 13 in PPR formats and rode 7 touchdowns to that finish.

Ben Roethlisberger loved throwing his TEs, but Big Ben retired.

Freiermuth chances to be a top 12 fantasy TE will again rely on his TDs. However, the Steelers are a changed team with a new quarterback and rookie WR George Pickens in the fold.

The second-year TE’s upside may be limited this season.
