Herbert, CMC top my efficiency charts in the preseason
I’ve been struggling with a story idea this week to prep everyone for the upcoming fantasy season because I’ve been having some writer’s block.
While a lot of my fellow fantasy football colleagues attend the Fantasy Football Expo in Canton, Ohio this weekend, I figured I’d start with my top 5 lists for the season and reveal my rankings next weekend.
(Rankings are based on my efficiency charts for the 2022 season.)
Quarterback Top 5
1. Justin Herbert, LA Chargers: The third-year signal caller will take another step in his development this season and will finish as the overall No. 1 QB in fantasy football.
SEASON STATS: 5,235 total yards, 40 passing TDs, 3 rushing TDs
2. Lamar Jackson, Baltimore: This one pains me as a Steelers fan, but a healthy Lamar will return to QB1 status.
SEASON STATS: 4,592 total yards, 33 passing TDs, 5 rushing TDs
3. Josh Allen, Buffalo: Allen continues to be elite, but slips a little as Herbert and Lamar have more efficient seasons.
SEASON STATS: 4,873 total yards, 35 passing TDs, 7 rushing TDs
4. Patrick Mahomes II, Kansas City: I don’t think the loss of Tyreek Hill hurts Mahomes in the wild, wild AFC West.
SEASON STATS: 5,365 total yards, 38 passing TDs, 2 rushing TDs
5. Kyler Murray, Arizona: I don’t understand the hate I’ve seen from some rankings on Kyler. If he’s healthy, he’s scary good.
SEASON STATS: 4,638 total yards, 31 passing TDs, 5 rushing TDs
Running Back Top 5
1. Christian McCaffrey, Carolina: CMC may never have his un-Godly numbers he had in 2019, but at least he stays healthy for most of this season.
SEASON STATS: 1,527 total yards, 63 receptions, 12 total TDs
2. Austin Ekeler, LA Chargers: Ekeler may see some downward TD regression this season but he is still one of the most efficient RBs in the league.
SEASON STATS: 1,457 total yards, 61 receptions, 14 total TDs
3. Jonathan Taylor, Indianapolis: Taylor had 30 attempts inside the 5 last year, and those resulted in 12 of his 20 TDs. The Colts offense could be more efficient passing near the goal line this year with Matt Ryan.
SEASON STATS: 1,650 total yards, 36 receptions, 11 total TDs
4. Najee Harris, Pittsburgh: The early word is the Steelers’ coaching staff wants to reduce his workload by 10-15 percent. That still points toward a solid fantasy season.
SEASON STATS: 1,525 total yards, 65 receptions, 10 total TDs
5. Derrick Henry, Tennessee: Just like CMC, I see Henry missing some games this season as the heavy early career workload begins to catch up.
SEASON STATS: 1,600 total yards, 27 receptions, 14 total TDs
I will have the wide receiver and tight end top 5 lists this weekend.
