Jefferson, Kelce claim top spots in my preseason efficiency charts
After writing my quarterback and running top 5 efficiency story, I started inputting the numbers for this year’s wide receivers and tight ends and I will have to admit I was surprised by the WR numbers.
I’m sure I will take some slack from the results but we have to remember these are projections – we get some right and we get some wrong (and sometimes really wrong – Mike Davis last year for me). But this is the fun part of fantasy football prognosticating!
Onto the top 5s!
(Rankings are based on my efficiency charts for the 2022 season.)
Wide Receiver Top 5
1. Justin Jefferson, Minnesota: The Vikings are expected to pass more than this season which bodes well for one of NFL’s best.
SEASON STATS: 125 receptions, 1,842 totals yards, 13 total TDs
2. Deebo Samuel, San Francisco: This one was a surprise to me, but the 49ers’ offense is so efficient why shouldn’t Deebo be the No. 2 WR.
SEASON STATS: 68 receptions, 1,580 total yards, 12 total TDs
3. Michael Pittman Jr., Indianapolis: OK I may be kind of bullish on Pittman Jr., but Matt Ryan is a major upgrade over Carson Wentz. And there are plenty of TDs in this offense!
SEASON STATS: 111 receptions, 1,443 total yards, 10 total TDs
4. Cooper Kupp, LA Rams: With Matthew Stafford’s ailing elbow and it’s hard to repeat a big fantasy season, Kupp dropped a few more spots than I expected.
SEASON STATS: 112 receptions, 1,499 total yards, 13 total TDs
5. Stefon Diggs, Buffalo: Of the top 10 targeted WRs in the red zone last year, Diggs had the second most (34) but only caught 55 percent of those passes (19). He did have 10 TDs on those 19 receptions.
SEASON STATS: 116 receptions, 1,425 total yards, 12 total TDs
Tight End Top 5
1. Travis Kelce, Kansas City: Kelce may actually be a little more efficient without Tyreek Hill.
SEASON STATS: 99 receptions, 1,238 total yards, 10 total TDs
2. Dalton Schultz, Dallas: Schultz and CeeDee Lamb are the top 2 pass catchers returning for the Cowboys this season, which means Schultz should be more involved.
SEASON STATS: 90 receptions, 1,010 total yards, 9 total TDs
3. Mark Andrews, Baltimore: I really don’t think Andrews is going to see more than 150 targets against this season, but it’s possible.
SEASON STATS: 82 receptions, 1,025 total yards, 9 total TDs
4. Kyle Pitts, Atlanta: The second-year player should be able to build off his solid rookie season, and he should see some positive TD regression.
SEASON STATS: 86 receptions, 1,126 total yards, 5 total TDs
5. George Kittle, San Francisco: If Kittle wasn’t such a good blocker, his receiving numbers would probably be better than they are.
SEASON STATS: 78 receptions, 975 total yards, 6 total TDs
